The Ph.D. program in the Department of Economics at Columbia University trains students to do cutting edge research in economics. Master of Arts Program in Economics. The Master of Arts program in the Department of Economics at Columbia is designed for students who wish to prepare themselves for careers in the field of economics or improve their knowledge of economic theory and its applications.
The free-standing MA program in Economics is intended for students who wish to improve their knowledge of economic theory and its applications, but who plan to pursue only the MA degree. The free-standing MA program may also be of interest to students seeking further training in economics before deciding whether to pursue a PhD in economics.
This is a stricter requirement than that of the Graduate School and reflects the fact that successful graduate study in economics depends crucially on your ability to understand, read, write and speak English. The Center on Japanese Economy and Business Doctoral Fellowship is available to any PhD applicant to the Columbia Economics Department or Columbia Business School who is interested in developing a Japan expertise, culminating in dissertation focused primarily on Japan.

Apply to the Ph.D. Program Applicants are normally expected to hold a Master’s degree in economics. However, students with outstanding records in undergraduate honours programs in economics may be admitted directly; such students should have demonstrated success in intermediate and upper-level undergraduate courses in economic theory, mathematics, statistics and econometrics.
Doctoral students begin the first year of the program by taking a series of PhD-level courses that provide an overview of theory and research across the entire field of management. In addition, advanced doctoral seminars are offered throughout the year by various faculty members.
